The 2023-24 Council members decided to work in small groups to advance different parts of our goals:

Inclusive Practice through Discourse

  • The purpose of the Inclusive Practice through Discourse sub-committee is to promote discourse about difficult conversations such as power imbalances in the academic setting.
  • We will do this by sharing “Pedagogy of Belonging,” an essay series by a GT graduate student, and then hosting a ‘brave space’ dialogue to offer practice for having uncomfortable conversations in the academic setting.
  • For more information or to get involved, please contact any of the following:

Train for an Inclusive Culture

  • The purpose of the Train for an Inclusive Culture sub-committee is to promote inclusive hiring practices of staff members throughout the Office of the Provost.
  • We will do this by reviewing current policies and practices, developing a set of best practices, and developing training for search committee members.

Act on Gathered Data

  • This group will collaborate with and learn from existing DEI Councils across the Georgia Tech campus.
  • We are working with Institute Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to survey and interview past and present DEI Councils about their initiatives and outcomes, which will help the OOP DEI Council in goal setting for future work. We will share these results with the wider Georgia Tech community.

Effectively Communicate

  • The goal of our sub-group is to effectively communicate the purpose, goals, and work of the DEI council to the broader Office of the Provost community.
  • As a team, we have worked to draft a communication sent by the Provost’s Office to introduce the council and invite students, staff, and faculty to join us virtually for one of our DEI Council hosted Office Hours to share thoughts and ideas or ask us questions about the work of the council and how to get involved in the future.

Collaborate Intentionally

  • This group is working on the creation of a voluntary job shadow program for employees within the Provost and Vice Provost units. More details to come soon!
  • The Council has two goals for such a program:
    1. We’d like participants to gain a broader awareness of possible career progression paths at Georgia Tech.
    2. We also want a job shadow program to foster collaboration across members of different campus units, which can help to break down silos, build relationships, and increase overall inclusion and engagement.
  • This initiative is being led by:

    • Brandi Foley-Rodgers
